This relatively short story from the late H. Beam Piper features the great State of Texas, projected into the future as an entire world, complete with ranchers, Texas Rangers, and super-sized EVERYTHING. Only the oil is missing from this enthusiastic projection. The story revolves around a new Solar League Ambassador to the world of New Texas, as he tries to deal with the murder of his immediate predecessor. The Solar League government is very unhappy with this murder, which it suspects might be associated with aggressive near-by canine-like aliens. The League is very willing to protect New Texas and NEEDS the planet to join the League so they can do just that, however due to their unique 'kill-the-politician' political accountability system, the New Texas government is unable to agree to becoming a League member. The story thus revolves around how Ambassador Silk can work around this self-protecting political unwillingness, and ultimately takes the form of a key New Texas courtroom battle. The leadership of the Solar League has also found another, quite sinister way to resolve this issue, for no-one would blame them for a 'justified conquest' of New Texas if a second one of their Ambassadors was murdered - as Ambassador Silk well knows, since in an earlier academic journal opinion article he had suggested that method himself! Good drama, action, political intrigue, a bit of romance, and brilliant courtroom action, with a very satisfying ending. Recommended reading!Product details

Lone Star Planet John Joseph McGuire 9781456498511 Books Reviews
I bought this book because I'm a Texan, and I found this book to be quite enjoyable! This book was written about half a century ago, and does a great job of capturing the Texan mindset. The characters are believable, the action is great fun, and the author does a great job of explaining Texan political theory. If you want to understand Texans better, or if you simply want a good, fun, shoot-em-up SF novel, this book is for you! Yee-ha!
I was so excited when I found this book on the kindle! I enjoyed reading this as a youngster with my father and love sharing it with anyone I can! This narrative will leave you howling with laughter and occasionally gripping your seat as a new ambassador navigates the strange customs and politics of his new residence! This book has a draw for many tastes. If you like comedy and westerns, (think Maverick and Blazing Saddles) you will like this book. If you like the western steam-punk feel of the cartoon Trigun, you will love this book. If you enjoyed Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker five book trilogy, you will most definitely have found another favorite science fiction novella!
HBP ha written of space at the start of the 23rd Century when the explosion of humans in the galaxy has spread to distant stars. An Ambassador has been appointed to New Texas to determine who mile the previous Ambassador. The League sent a man disguised as an old Texas Ranger. The Ranger on arrival thought, "One planet one Ranger." This is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
I'm not sure if Piper ever visited Texas. But this presents the vision of what would happen if Texans had a planet of their own to mold into their image of what should be . . . and as a Texan I think he did a damn good job.
Granted, I think legalizing the murder of politicians proposing an income tax goes too far . . . but I empathize.
I have been a fan of H. Beam Piper ever since my Aunt gave me a Present of Lord Kalvin of Otherwhen when I was 12. I bought this as a pocketbook with two books in one. This story (Lone Star Planet) and the other story being the Four-Day planet years ago. When I saw this for a free Book, I jumped at the chance to download it to my .
The Bottom Line is with this, What if the state of Texeas left Earth & settled on a planet just like Texas? And then, what would happen when the growing Terran Federation Needs the planet of New Texas to join them due to an alien threat? How would you convince an entire planet of of individulistic Federation wary Texans to Join? Get one of the Hooligan Diplomats to convince them, that's how!
